A folding bike. Room for more.

Less space at home. More possibilities outside it. Here’s what to check before choosing a folding e-bike.

Measure the space you have.

Compare the manufacturer’s folded dimensions with the cupboard, hallway, boot or storage space you plan to use. A photograph of a folded bike cannot tell you whether it will fit.

Be honest about carrying it.

Folding does not always mean lightweight. Check the full bike weight, whether the battery is removable and how you will lift it. Small wheels and compact frames have different ride characteristics, so think about comfort on your route.

Check the journey rules.

If you plan to take a bike on public transport, check the operator’s current rules for folding bikes, e-bikes and lithium batteries. Permission varies; do not assume the folded size is the only factor.

Make the fold familiar.

Use the manufacturer’s instructions to learn the folding mechanism, secure every latch before riding and check for wear. Never force a hinge or improvise a locking arrangement.

Check current UK electric bike rules and the exact model specification.

Make it your journey.
